THE DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS at the UW School of Dentistry (UWSOD) has a long and illustrious history of outstanding academics and research and is internationally recognized as one of the finest in the world. A significant contributor toward this history of excellence is Dr. Herbert Selipsky. The Department is celebrating Dr. Selipsky's 50 years of valuable contributions by naming a new endowment in his honor. This new endowed fund will provide assistance for graduate students in the Department of Periodontics to support the costs of tuition for their education.
THE PURPOSE of this endowment will be to provide financial support and recognition for graduate students enrolled in the Graduate Program in Periodontics, and to promote the recruitment and retention of outstanding residents in periodontics.
Dr. Frank Roberts, chair of the department, said, “The Periodontics Department is very excited to have Dr. Selipsky’s generous anchor gift to this fund that will benefit our graduate periodontics students and program for years to come. The alumni are enthusiastic about supporting our graduate periodontics students with this fund and honoring Herb in his 50th year of teaching periodontics at the University of Washington. Dr. Selipsky is a stalwart supporter of our periodontics residents and continues to be a star alumnus of our program, and we are very thankful for his generosity with his time and talents.”

“Dr. Selipsky has shown me what it takes to be a great clinician. Even with his decades of experience he is still humble, and he always looks for opportunities to learn more. He has inspired me to be the best I can be and seek out more opportunities to learn.
This fellowship would allow the residents to pursue their passion in Periodontics without the financial burden. I am grateful for his generosity, and I have no doubt this fellowship would create even more highly skilled surgeons from the University of Washington Department of Periodontics”.

“Dr. Selipsky has been an integral part of the University of Washington Periodontics Department for the last half century. His yearly course on classic osseous surgery for the first-year residents is unmatched by any other program, but his feedback in seminars is just as important. Dr. Selipsky is never short of helpful surgical tricks, but also instills the importance of patient-specific oral hygiene. This fellowship will help continue to attract top candidates to the UW and will relieve stress and financial burden on the residents to allow them to focus on the rigors of the residency, and thus recruit and produce excellent periodontists”.

“I feel singularly honored by all this recognition, but honestly,
all that I may have contributed wasn't hard—it has always been a labor of love. I stand on the shoulders of giants, as do we all! …
Now how to create some sort of legacy, not for me but for all of us?"
"As Saul Schluger once said, ‘The greatest legacy for all of you after I go, is to work hard to make this program even greater than it is and to always keep it as the best—that’s the legacy I want.’ Starting right from there we have a foundation to build on.
Most of us have everything we have achieved in social status, professional recognition, and financial success because of having gone through our UW program—a bond we share. Plus, all the wonderful other faculty, both full and part time, share in this legacy, and have become an integral part of our family, too.”
THE CASE FOR AN ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP
OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, the cost of dental education, particularly in dental specialties such as periodontics, has risen exponentially. This poses hardships for a large number of residents and discourages many outstanding candidates from applying to the UWSOD Department of Periodontics. The competition is intense among dental schools for the best periodontic students.
An Endowed Fellowship in Periodontics at the UWSOD is critical for several important reasons:
It signifies the importance of the Department of Periodontics to the School of Dentistry.
It ensures that funding is available in perpetuity to assist periodontics residents with the costs of their education. This will provide them
relief from the financial pressures of attending graduate school for three years and will allow them to focus fully on their education.
It offers a competitive edge nationally in recruiting the best possible residents.
It is a fitting and poignant way to honor and recognize the profound contributions of a distinguished member of the UWSOD Department of Periodontics.
The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to cover tuition for every periodontics resident.
IN ORDER TO establish an endowed fund that will provide a level of support to be competitive with other dental schools, we are launching an aggressive fundraising campaign to bring this vision to fruition.
Dr. Selipsky and his family have already made a generous contribution to kickstart this effort, along with other significant commitments from alumni members of the fundraising committee. Please consider building our legacy by making a generous contribution to help us reach our goal of $10,000,000. Thank you!
“With this endowment added to the quality of our outstanding interdisciplinary training program, I fully expect that we will be able to continue to attract the best of the best. I see us building a truly pre-eminent #1 world class program and perio center. So let us forge ahead and become known as ‘The Miracle at Washington’!”
